Negative Indices and Standard form - part 2


Exercise 2

Write as negative powers of 10 the following: 

a) 0.001
Solution: 0.001 = 10-3 (10 to the power of -3)
 
b) 0.01 = 10 to the power of 
c) 0.0001 = 10 to the power of 
d) 0.00000001 = 10 to the power of 

Exercise 3

Write the following decimals in standard form: 

a) 0.004
Solution: 0.004 = 4 x10-3
The decimal point has moved three places to the right.

Remember (from lesson 1):
In standard form notation we have 2 parts to the number:

  • the first,  is a decimal part with the decimal point after the first digit
  • the second part is the power of ten
